Shlohmo

I was introduced to Shlohmo by Squeegie blog (that’s not a first), they posted him about a month ago but I only downloaded his mix recently I and it has literally blown my mind with intelligence. This LA man has some brain, and he channels his obscene IQ into making glitchy glitch-hop and other astounding grooves using samples, synths and god knows what. Here’s bare tracks and a few mixes he’s done, all astonishing pieces of music. Oh yeah, and check the Devonwho remix of Shlohmo’s ‘7am’, with the same feel but even more spacey!

Sorry!

Sorry for not doing a best of 2009 like we said we would everyone. I mean I did my half of the post, but SOMEONE didn’t and SOMEONE is a lazy bastard. But enough persecution, here are some really quite superb tracks to ease the pain and in some cases cause more.

NOISIA, FOREIGN BEGGARS – NO HOLDS BARRED (EXCISION REMIX)

THE CONSTELLATIONS – SETBACK (STARKEY REMIX)

CAMEL – SMOKING TRUMPET

JOY ORBISON – SO DEROBE

POIRIER – KALIMA SHOP TITI FT. BOOGAT (DOUSTER REMIX)

DELPHIC – HALCYON (L-VIS 1990 REMIX)

PINK A PAD’S – PINK IS BACK (GTRONIC REMIX)

ROUND TABLE KNIGHTS – CALYPSO

LEE MORTIMER, FOAMO – SUPERMAN

BART B MORE – ROMANE (FRENCH FRIES & BAMBOUNOU REMIX)

MALENTE & JAY ROBINSON – DWARFS (SHARKSLAYER REMIX)

URCHINS, SPOEK – TICKETS (BLATTA & INESHA REMIX)

QUINTINO – YOU KNOW WHAT (ALVARO REMIX)

WOLFGANG GARTNER – UNDERTAKER

I came to the city of Amsterdam

Beataucue have released a new remix of Jennifer Delano’s ‘Amsterdam’. It is of course brilliant, with their signature deep thumping kick drum pulsating under clever bleeps and cheeky synths. It’s more progressive than their earlier work, building up into rhythmic bliss and down again. Beataucue have some more remixes coming out soon which sound equally superb and better. Looking forward to the release of their remix of Sound Of Stereo’s classic ‘Zipper’.
JENNIFER DELANO – AMSTERDAM (BEATAUCUE REMIX)

AND ANOTHER THING! Another few more things. Lee Mortimer has been back to his best for a few months now. These two newish remixes caught my eye recently, both with grinding basslines, check em out.
BASSMONKEYS, BIANCA LINDGREN – GET BUSY (LEE MORTIMER REMIX)
FUTUREHEADS – STRUCK DUMB (LEE MORTIMER REMIX)

This next track was released for free on French label Bebup’s EP featuring Douster, Jay Weed and Arcade. A tribal feast, this track is slightly more techy than tribal however. Get the whole EP for free below as well.
ARCADE – JUGO CARIOCA & DARIO POPULAR (DOUSTER REMIX)

BEBUP – EPISODE 1
Tracklist:1. Arcade – Jugo Carioca & Diario Popular (Douster Remix)
2. Arcade – Jugo Carioca & Diario Popular
3. Douster – Allelujah
4. Douster – Allelujah (Jay Weed Remix)
5. Jay Weed – Asimbonanga
6. Jay Weed – Asimbonanga (Arcade Remix)

That was a bit pointless posting the track and the EP, oh well. Next up is Joker remix of Sub Focus, up to his usual purple mischief.
SUB FOCUS – COULD THIS BE REAL (JOKER REMIX)

LA’s experimental electronicmeister Nosaj Thing has produced an atmospheric and generally excellent remix of The XX’s ‘Islands’. His album is dropping this June and should be quite something!
THE XX – ISLANDS (NOSAJ THING REMIX)

Last but certainly not least is A1 Bassline’s remix of Fugative.  This boy sure is good at adapting, now producing techy afrobeat bangers with distinction!
FUGATIVE – SUPAFLY (A1 BASSLINE REMIX)

Various exciting things

Ok not that exciting, but some nice fresh music here, and a batch of mixtapes which we haven’t done in a while, not that you’ll need them after Mustard Pimp’s 24 hour one!

First up Skream’s newish track which featured on the superb Crookers Mishka mix. Its a tonking percussive menacer, with large snares and an evil beat. As the name sugests its pretty minimal, lacking in any large bass roars and just creating a pretty moody dubstep piece.
SKREAM – MINIMALISTIX

I posted a Numan track in the large update, and he has other very good tracks out, go buy! This is a MarchMellow remix, the same one which brought you the classic steppa ‘Reel Simple’. Numan uses quite simple yet orginal sounds to make his basslines in a clever way, and MarchMellow has used this to create a banger with an odd twist.
NUMAN – 7TH KEY (MARCHMELLOW PHUNK REMIX)

The next artist has some name, but is also known for their tribal/dancehall style infused into a sort of dubsteppy feel and bpm. Cool stuff, quite minimal but a real mover. Get the ‘Ayoba’ EP here. Highly reccomended!
SCHLACHTHOBRONX – AYOBA FT. SPOEK & GUCCI BANANA

I was sent this by artist Phono.o who I must admit have never heard of before. It seemed he was repping the future garage/new dub sound so I had to give his remix a listen. I was impressed and had to share his two chord purple wonder with all you.
ROBERT KOCH – GOROM SEM (PHONO.O REMIX)

SBTRKT is another artist who’s taking dubstep to a different level. Here is an original track which is actually a remix of Radiohead’s ‘Everything in its right place’, one of my favourite Radiohead songs, surely you can’t wrong with that! Obviously not said SBTRKT.
SBTRKT – RIGHT PLACE

Another artist which our mail shed light on is 10 Rapid. This original track is a real electro bleeping banger. With strains of D.I.M.’s drums and synth sounds but more techy, and a dirty bassline! A very large track indeed.
10 RAPID – IT’S NOT RIGHT

Now onto some dirty fidget/electro house mixes, all superb…..naturally.

This trully large update includes some tracks by artists repping the new dubstep style that boasts broken beats, purple sounds and simply more experimental behaviour. Modeselektor – Art & Cash

Modeselektor are geniuses. Creating thought-provoking, emotional, banging and some downright weird shit. Here we have an emotional yet banging track and a thought-provoking yet downright weird video! Directed by artist Pfadfinderei the video, this is how he describes the story “Versed on the international art trade floor it was easy for them to win over two sought-after art dealers; to seal the deal and to go on a shopping spree. “Art & Cash” is the shocking “behind the scenes” documentary of that German art campaign. In the process a scandal was revealed that is shaking experts to this day. For years and under the watchful eyes of millions did the “Fantastic Nobodies” – exceptionally gifted art counterfeiters and weirdos from Brooklyn – manage to sell themselves as renowned works of art, thus creating inexplicable damage…”. The track itself has a driving bassline, pounding drums at a slow pace of about 100-110 bpm and an encapsulating melody with the synths. Beautiful.

MODESELEKTOR – CASH

Bassnectar – Cozza Frenzy>>THE ALBUM!

Musical genius Bassnectar has at last released a studio LP with 14 superb tracks. He’s purposefully produced 7 heavy bassers and 7 peaceful chillers to give all and all a very eclectic sounding album. A few are classic dubstep crunchers at around 140/70 bpm and the rest are at a hip-hoppy 90 bpm showing Bassnectars love for hip-hop. Hip-step, dub-hop, can’t decide which one sounds better. The fact is, this album offers all strains of the genre and more, from the heavy bangers, to groovy numbers, to chilled instrumentals. Oh yeah, and there’s one fucking mental drum n bass track! Here’s the title track and another bassy wonder for a taster. Buy and enjoy.

multi layered cosmic gemstone butter

hudson_mohawke_blog

hello!!!!!!!

BIG NEWS —-—————-

hudson mohawke (oh deeear!) has announced the RELEASE of his obscene incredible sparkly gemstoney unreal fantastic beast (WITH ILL ARTWORK!) of a debut album entitled BUTTER via the superlabel WARP records on the 12th OCTOBER!!!!!

WARPCD188-Packshot-480

and it is set to be big!

saw him at melt festival back in july and it was probably the best allround dj set i’ve EVER seen – and his production matches up totally. IF YOU ARE GONNA BE AT BESTIVAL THIS WEEKEND DONT YOU MISS HIM – see you there!!!

so here – catch a preview of BUTTER (it sounds so buttery you wont even believe it this man is so talented – and its all done on fruityloops as you will see below!) plus an interview featured over at BLEEP (where you can preorder the album) and finally a whole glistening track – RISING5 -that will be on the album that is total talent! without further ado

RISING5

BUTTER (SNIPS)!

————————————————————————————————————

What’s behind the name of the new album, ‘Butter’?

I just wanted the title to reflect the production and I felt that word was the perfect description in so many different ways, whether you interpret it literally or you think of a more far out buttery concept.

It’s also partly just because I just really love short-bread.

————————————————————————————————————

We heard a rumour that you were asked to put forward some tracks for Michael Jackson. Is this true?

well… it was discussed at one point…it was very much just in initial stages though… but who knows what could have happened if it panned out….quite gutted about that…I am working on submitting tracks for a few other major artists though

————————————————————————————————————

In an ideal world, who would you like to collaborate with?
CeeLo, Grace Jones, Busta Rhymes, Tunde Adebimpe, Jay Z, Dexter Wansel, Andre3000, David Bowie, so many…

hudmo-digi-flat

————————————————————————————————————

How did you end up collaborating with Dam-Funk and what was he like to work with?

We were just fans of each others work and I decided to go to him with some tracks to try and involve him in the record. He was great to work with, amazingly humble and genuine guy, we’ll have some more joint goodness coming soon with any luck.

————————————————————————————————————

From what we can hear your music has incredibly rich texture and multiple layers of sounds. Can you give us an insight into your technical process of making beats?

Its not a really complicated process, I keep it quite simple, nothing more than just whats flowing out of my head at the time, once I have 1 or 2 elements I kind of get an image in my head of where everything else has to sit on the track and from there it just flows. technically speaking, its all sequenced in fruityloops, I have a few keyboards, a piano and a load of drums and percussion instruments, and also just got a talkbox hehe. I used to be really into sampling but at the moment Im trying to kind of create my own samples, making sort of mini/condensed tracks playing all the parts and melodies myself and then chopping those mini tracks up as if i had sampled them off vinyl.
————————————————————————————————————

Who are your top 5 producers of all time?

tough question…theres more than 5, but in no order, 5 of my classics; Quincy Jones, Just Blaze, Timbo, Premier, Neptunes…

————————————————————————————————————

How do you feel your music, your aspirations and yourself as an artist sit amongst being part of Warp Records?

For me I think Warp is my ideal home, Its the only place I can get away with basically doing exactly what I want musically, right accross the board, and still know that the label will give me full support and artistic freedom or at least some good crit if its total shit heh. It’s also just a good home for the more twisted end of a genre and so while I sometimes think my my music doesnt necessarily sit with alot of their previous releases, it does definitely fit the principles and ethos of the label and I think that is more important. In terms of my aspirations Warp are right behind me and are helping to push me continually so that hopefully soon I’ll be able to do these collabs and everything else that only exists as a dream in my head at the moment, and even if i end up broke and homeless next year, I at least got to release a record on Warp and a couple of years back even that wouldve been a completely unrealistic aspiration for me, so its alll gooood!!
