this guy is one cool dude. saw him at the warehouse project a month ago and stumbled across this superb remix of one of my favorite bands recently and boy, he’s just cool. check the interview and the song. both are funkabulous!
recently i’ve been growing a little bored of this whole pitch up>put the discs in/on>leave club attitude most of the artists i go see have. granted that’s what these genres generally consist of live however, i do love it when there’s a variable to the performance or just some variation to the entertainment. thats where these two artists come in….first, gentleman’s dub club, a nine piece band formed in leeds, they deliver high energy live shows with a style based in ska, dub and roots reggae. their stunning EP ‘members only’ is out now, buy here. the second is jazzsteppa, put simply this is live dubstep. boom! “Originally formed by ShmueL! (Gal Moore) & BarBie (Gal Bar-Adon) in 2006, Jazzsteppa is the first live dubstep band. The four original band members managed to create a unique sound using their experience as live jazz musicians combined with their ongoing involvement with bass-heavy dance-floor music.” these guys killed it in manchester on friday at drumclinic with dj and live trombone, or so i’ve heard, i was watching and meeting fatboy slim! wooo! anyway i emplore you to go see these guys if ever they come your way.
ok this has been a long absence from writing. laziness if you ask me. there’s lots of house about as a consequence, not such a bad thing but i’ve got here a tasty bag of goodies new and old. this one has been brewing for a while……
JOKER what a big name at the moment, i reckon he’s a very talented boy and i hope there’s big things waiting for him. these two slightly older tunes of his are classic examples of his liquid funk synths, pure purple as the man himself may say.
and if you’re a fan of joker’s sound TERROR DANJAH is your man. having just released a collection of his instrumentals, remixes and tracks on planet mu records called GREMLINZ, he’s just beginning to get the recognition he deserves. he is considered one of the finest grime producers ever if not the best by the grime cognoscenti, originally part of the nasty crew and then aftershock, terror has released countless 12″s and remixes as well as several mixtapes. if you want to hear a precursor to joker, and the new bristol producers, here it is.
untold and the whole hemlock label have been really amazing me with untold’s own, ‘gonna work out fine’ EP making for cracking listening. however, it is fantastic mr JAMES BLAKE’s remix of stop what you’re doing by untold which is the finest. one of the best tunes of the year in my opinion.
having recently visited the infamous SUBDUB in leeds for shackleton, distance, peverelist and scuba on saturday i’ve been listening to JOY ORBISON a lot, who seemed to be artist of choice for those boys in leeds. here’s hyph mngo as a taster but i emplore you to have a look around for some of his other releases, GOLD.
of course we do have some of conventional dubstep hiding around here. SKREAM is givng away one of his tracks, what did he say, to promote the WHY NOT? boxing day d&b and dubstep bonanza at the ministry of sound. it looks nuts if you ask me, i’ll still be at the leftovers on boxing day…..
belgium is a place for dubstep. that was something obvious at this year’s DOUR festival where some belgians nearly shit their pants over joker, n-type and especially rusko. wow what a festival. but the man in focus is GANJA WHITE NIGHT. he’s been cracking out tune after tune that really hit the spot. a man to follow, a man to trust. gayfish is pretty purple growler, watch out.
now here to finish off is the real mixed bucket. machester local MRK 1 puts a brilliant spin on a big norrisman tune, PRIMARY 1 put together an old but super-varied mixtape, interwoven with kubrick samples and, from the vault, the kings of funk BROTHERS JOHNSON deliver probably one of the finest songs ever. bye.

In my opinion DJ Manaia has really come into his own recently. He’s really working that afrobeat yet keeping the tunes grimey or just plain mental. On these two remixes he couldn’t really go wrong as the originals are proper sound (Sound Of Stereo ‘Zipper EP’ out tomorrow!). These remixes are still just keeping me from blowing my brains out waiting for his soon to be released ‘King Kong’. You can hear it on a minimix we recently posted or on his myspace (link below). Look out for the fucking massive gorilla, gonna be deadly!
Right, time to wow you with some non-bassy wonders. A bit of quiet after the storm of electro and fidget we’ve been posting recently!

Naturally we update you on any new Mightyfools releases. Their latest is on Potty Mouth Music and contains two original tracks which are both good electro house tracks. Not amazing however, which is disappointing, amazing is the least I expect from the twisted Dutch duo. But hey, they’re still good tracks with a good recipe for the dance floor. Anyway, I know for a fact there are some fucking bangers on their way from the Mightyfools. Just you wait….
MIGHTYFOOLS – WORSE THAN YESTERDAY (160 kbps)
MIGHTYFOOLS – CLEAN IT (160 kbps)
Modeselektor are geniuses. Creating thought-provoking, emotional, banging and some downright weird shit. Here we have an emotional yet banging track and a thought-provoking yet downright weird video! Directed by artist Pfadfinderei the video, this is how he describes the story “Versed on the international art trade floor it was easy for them to win over two sought-after art dealers; to seal the deal and to go on a shopping spree. “Art & Cash” is the shocking “behind the scenes” documentary of that German art campaign. In the process a scandal was revealed that is shaking experts to this day. For years and under the watchful eyes of millions did the “Fantastic Nobodies” – exceptionally gifted art counterfeiters and weirdos from Brooklyn – manage to sell themselves as renowned works of art, thus creating inexplicable damage…”. The track itself has a driving bassline, pounding drums at a slow pace of about 100-110 bpm and an encapsulating melody with the synths. Beautiful.
Half of Twocker and Bass Weazal, and owner of Simma records Will Bailey has again teamed up with new LA fidget kid Hot Mouth to produce a rather superb track. Literally funky fidget, using those piercing glitchy noises to produce and real funky mover. I’m really liking Simma records at the moment, releasing singles and remixes from some of my favourite electro house artists including Mightyfools, Gigi Barocco, Sound Of Stereo, Aniki and of course Hout Mouth. Watch out for Hot Mouth’s next EP ‘I Have Friends’ which will feature collaborations with TJR, Nom De Strip and Will Bailey. Now get yo funk on!
