UDACHI AND THE MAGIC ROUNDABOUT: AN INTERVIEW

udachi

WITH a brand shiny new mixtape out, not to mention a whole damn new label, UDACHI is on the brink of becoming one of the biggest, baddest, most bassed out wonder-creatures on america’s east coast – so the wizards thought it was about time to find out what really gets mr udachi and his wobbly rave brain going  – I – I – I – I – I -N – T – E – R – V – I – E -W ! ! ! ! ! ! ! !

——————

(this is us)
UDACHI! How are you doing this fair spring morning?

(so obviously this is him)
fantastic, just got back from miami winter music conference with renewed wind in my sails, now back to the nine to five grind.

So you, AC slater and b rich – a tripod of banging bass heads from NYC & Boston – have recently launched your very own label – party like us records – what should we expect from this GIGANTIC electro alliance?

Man… i can’t even begin to tell you how excited i am for this label, as of right now we have the namesake single out by big bass bully AC Slater “party like us”. With remixes by yours truly, Bulgarian, Kanji Kinetic and Shy child! Next up we have AC’s banGer hitting the virtual shelves of our favorite digi stores with remix cuts from non other than Trouble and Bass big daddy himself Drop the Lime + more! (GET IT BELOW!)

After that we have a new artist called BOLTAN ( http://www.myspace.com/itsboltan ) coming out with a 5 track EP of lot’s of good trippy big room dub weirdness, some bassline, some techno, something for everybody! Followed up by a remix of the Boltan EP in the works with DZ, Blatta & Inesha, Mightyfools + more!

I think after that we have the B Rich EP so far from the few track’s i’ve heard it looks to be a monster of a release, some up to date 2 step mayhem, and some crazy dub killers that im afraid to even talk about, or basslines might crack my skull open in my sleep.

your style definitely cannot be put into any sort of box, but the insane blend of stomping bass, cheesy pop vocals, bassline-esc bouncy rhythm, wobble, and even trance power synths that you manipulate to create insanties of the like we witnessed in your ac slater and jason tyler remixes is just phenomenal – HOW DO YOU DO IT?!
I usually start out by stretching my calf muscles in a half crescent moon stance before lifting 50″ bassbins over my head to warm up. Then i time stretch everything that goes on in my brain, add 3 oscillators to represent my 3 stasis of being, a high freq oscilator for melting the neuron receptors and making you rush more, a 2nd oscilator for good hearty chompy tweeter loving snap, and of course good ol’ subby for the bass horse kick into your chest and out of your 3rd eye into the multiverse.

All kidding aside, i really try to capture the manic nature of dance music in the now, the few things i’ve learned over time is that timing and placement is everything, high frequencies like white noise sweeps, buzzing sounds or any kind of background noise that sounds a little off triggers a physical almost instinctual style of reaction out of people, little things like that become less about chin-stroking and more really about getting down and reacting to the music on a primal level. Same goes for low end, properly placed bass can be amazing, too much bass can sickening, to me it’s all about finding that good balance between poppy and weird..i’m still working on it, il get back to you when i figure it out myself!

My primary influences range from legendary DJ Luna-C (Kniteforce) and Panacea, my world was completely changed after hearing their music and seeing them perform. Their style of music represents to me the “balls out who gives a fuck what i play it’s awesome!” punk aesthetic that i think has been ingrained into my thought process of what i play.

I still listen to this mix on a constant basis: http://www.megaupload.com/?d=Z2SRB2Q7 (panacea @ knitefever) (warning DnB/HC/Breakcore!!) I highly reccomend it.

now i’ve heard rumoured that Party Like Us Records is a secretly a clever little nudge at the acronym PLUR, or peace, love, unity, respect – a trademark of 80’s/90’s rave culture! as a youngun growing up today the constant references to this lost culture have figured in my head like some bejewelled mythical creature standing in mist on a mountainside in the andes – WE WANT TO GO BACK IN TIME! your ‘party like us’ remix especially screams 90’s power party – what did us kids really miss out on? is a return to rave what we should be expecting from PLUR?
Haha yeah the it worked out that was strange and incidental, AC and I were sitting around trying to figure out label names, and the hillarious namesake came from the title track “party like us” with the records added on, we both looked at each other like we were the most clever fucks in the universe and said “PLUR!”. It made the most sense, seeing how Party Like Us also has a bit of an inclusive theme, including not just the DJ’s and producers, but everyone on the dancefloor, can party like us. Somehow we haven’t been egged to death yet by ex candy ravers so i think we’re gonna keep rolling with it! (no pun intended)

But yes i think we (AC, B.Rich and I) all come from the similar school of hardcore raves and DJ’s. It’s a bit tongue in cheek seeing how most of us would like to put some of those memorable and not so memorable nights behind us. But again it ultimately comes down to where you come from and what moves you most. Most of us early on would find ourselves knee deep in rave sweat, either in canada or in some sketchy rave in the midwest raising our hands to the sky to some of the most uplifting piano melodies, manic synths and chimpunk vocals!

plur1

now for some practical questions –
you have to eat one sort of PIE for the rest of your life – whats it gonna be- PURE apple / tangy rhubarb / or summer berries with apricot?
man.. that rhubarb sounds superb, i’m a sourpuss by nature and i love salty/sour/tart stuff, so i’d have to go with the rhubarb.

5 big tunes blaring out of your speakers right now?

1 – DeVille – Quente Demais (Kanji Kinetic Remix)

2 – BOLTAN ft J. Blum – Nine to Five (DZ Remix)

3 – AC Slater – Hello (MP3!)

4 – Drop the Lime – Howling

5 – Acid Jacks – Crazy Legs

Honorable mention Jam to rock out to in the car:

MSTRKFT – 1,000 cigarettes (MP3!) (COCK ROCK DRIVING JAM OF THE YEAR)

in terms of new electro producers – who should we be keeping an eye out for?
There’s a new electro producer popping up every 5 seconds, it’s really hard for me to figure out who’s “new” at this point, since i guess im technically “new”…

In terms of most recent happy discovery, i simply have to go with Squire of Gothos, their release on Electrostimulation is in constant rotation in my crate.

and what is the new york music scene like – should we be emigrating?
I think the new york dance scene is at it’s best that i’ve seen in years, lot’s more successfull one off events happening, also Trouble and Bass KILLING it with the monthly guests. This summer is going to get slightly bonkers, most urban dwellers go into hiding over the winter, but once spring and summer hits, there are so many fun FREE things to do in new york it almost get’s overwhelming. Plus my friends at NYCR and Newmindspace are telling me they have a ton of warehouse parties in the works in brooklyn, i haven’t seen such a high resurgence of rave love as i have in a last couple of years. Hopefully the pattern will continue with more fun things on the way.

OPINIONS on three of our favourite artists….

MUSTARD PIMP?
oh shit! should i feel like an idiot for not knowing about these guys? I heard tommie sunshine drop their remix of motorhead in miami, it slayed for sure. I’m definitely gonna be digging more of these guys thanks! (friendededed)

JACK BEATS?
Had the sincere pleasure of seeing Jack Beats twice within a few weeks span, once in new york (solo) for trouble and bass, and the other for bang bang (DJ Craze’s WMC Party) playing back to back with AC Slater, both times JB absolutley destroyed it. I’ve been sweating jack beats ever since their remix of boy 8 bit’s “fogbank”, since then monster tracks like “what” and their remix of lady sov give me goosebumps every time i hear them.

These guys are shaping modern dance music as we speak, so pay attention!

RAFFERTIE?
Weeewaaaaoooo wobblewobble! This man really knows how to modulate, i’m quite jealous!

finally- ON A SCALE OF 1 TO BASS HOW MUCH DO YOU LIKE BASS?
BABABABABABABASSSSLINEEEE

nice. thanks a lot dude – it has been a true pleasure!

“There’s nothing i love more than coming home from work on a friday night and getting amped to go out. A healthy bass exercise to work the nine to five demons out is always what the doctor ordered. This mix represents a healthy diet of twitchy bass goodness. I might suggest a proper stretch on some kind bud and dub prior to this workout. Remember to drink plenty of liquids. Happy Modulating!”
