ok this has been a long absence from writing. laziness if you ask me. there’s lots of house about as a consequence, not such a bad thing but i’ve got here a tasty bag of goodies new and old. this one has been brewing for a while……
………………………………
JOKER what a big name at the moment, i reckon he’s a very talented boy and i hope there’s big things waiting for him. these two slightly older tunes of his are classic examples of his liquid funk synths, pure purple as the man himself may say.
and if you’re a fan of joker’s sound TERROR DANJAH is your man. having just released a collection of his instrumentals, remixes and tracks on planet mu records called GREMLINZ, he’s just beginning to get the recognition he deserves. he is considered one of the finest grime producers ever if not the best by the grime cognoscenti, originally part of the nasty crew and then aftershock, terror has released countless 12″s and remixes as well as several mixtapes. if you want to hear a precursor to joker, and the new bristol producers, here it is.
untold and the whole hemlock label have been really amazing me with untold’s own, ‘gonna work out fine’ EP making for cracking listening. however, it is fantastic mr JAMES BLAKE’s remix of stop what you’re doing by untold which is the finest. one of the best tunes of the year in my opinion.
having recently visited the infamous SUBDUB in leeds for shackleton, distance, peverelist and scuba on saturday i’ve been listening to JOY ORBISON a lot, who seemed to be artist of choice for those boys in leeds. here’s hyph mngo as a taster but i emplore you to have a look around for some of his other releases, GOLD.
…………………..

of course we do have some of conventional dubstep hiding around here. SKREAM is givng away one of his tracks, what did he say, to promote the WHY NOT? boxing day d&b and dubstep bonanza at the ministry of sound. it looks nuts if you ask me, i’ll still be at the leftovers on boxing day…..
belgium is a place for dubstep. that was something obvious at this year’s DOUR festival where some belgians nearly shit their pants over joker, n-type and especially rusko. wow what a festival. but the man in focus is GANJA WHITE NIGHT. he’s been cracking out tune after tune that really hit the spot. a man to follow, a man to trust. gayfish is pretty purple growler, watch out.
now here to finish off is the real mixed bucket. machester local MRK 1 puts a brilliant spin on a big norrisman tune, PRIMARY 1 put together an old but super-varied mixtape, interwoven with kubrick samples and, from the vault, the kings of funk BROTHERS JOHNSON deliver probably one of the finest songs ever. bye.

Just a little dub update for ya. Kicking off with the stinkiest producer in dub, Stenchman, with his new track ‘Cut in half’. It features a spooky synth melody, an obvious dose of deliciously wobbly bass and an unexpected minute of lamenting blues in the middle!
Not sure if this is that new put it sure is awesome from our man Cookie Monsta, can’t wait to have him play at our second night! The name of the track speaks for itself.
More cleverly crafted, hip-hoppy and not too over top dub from Joker with a remix of The Body Snatchers.
Don’t know why I’m posting this last cos its probably my favourite of the lot. Sukh Knight produces an awesome remix with cool rhythmical MCing put through a robotic effect, stabbing and bending bass driven by a synth on the off beat reggae style.

After a few unhappy comments on my last post about the inevitable invasion of minimal/tribal/tech house, which were actually expected, its probably best we give you some hugeness! You may have to get used to more minimal posts, seeing as us wizards actually quite like it now. But if you think we’re going soft on ya, well then…….you’re very wrong! Wobble and bass is in our veins and we’ll never grow tired of it! Constant bangers will be posted, and here’s a few which I’m loving at the moment.
First two tracks from electro wobbler Sticky K, both worthy of any dirty dancefloor. ‘The Testament of Dr. Mabuse’ sways towards the wobble side with a rhythmic bass synth and a fidgety beat. On the other hand ‘Alphaville’ is a horror film electro banger.
New Jack Beats remix here of guess who, La Roux. This is proper old school Jack Beats , with a definate tinge of their legendary remix of AC Slater’s ‘Jack Got Jacked’, but they also incorporate La Roux’s undoubtedly brilliant voice in the build ups and bridges. The main bassline rhythm is a classic, but certainly nothing new.
Joker’s on fire at the moment, producing dubstep that is actually pleasant to listen to. No chugging metallic bass (don’t get me wrong, we love hyper dub!). I’m loving this track, warm yet warped bass combined with Mario/Crystal Castles-esque synths creating a groovy dub instrumental.
More dub, but on a different level completely. I didn’t know that there was a Lopside EP by Stagga released a few months back. I downloaded the title track expecting greatness and that’s exactly what I got. This track is all over the place, hence ‘Lopside’, with Stagga’s signature sound pitch bending till your brain melts alongside a chilled beat thanks to the clever use of a ride cymbal.
Another man with a particularly superb signature sound is Gtronic. Along with his dirty dirty bass grinding along, there’s some very pleasant synth and vocal melodies in this remix of Heads We Dance’s ‘Sirens’.
Rico Tubbs is a man on form. We loved ‘Cutty’ which we posted a few weeks ago. Usual use of a funky disco feel, topped off with his brilliantly created wobbly bassline.
This next tune is a real journey. A massive build up including syncopating bongos, interesting effects on the vocals and great production climaxing to a short period of crazy ravy synths.
Ha! An absolute classic original track which is Fat Boy Slim’s ‘Right Here, Right Now’ is confidently remixed by Trumpdisco, staying true to the original and bringing it into 2009 by remixing it as an excellent electro banger.
Afrojack has already impressed us with his remix of Silvio Ecomo and Chuckie’s ‘Moombah’ which is probably my tribal house anthem so far this year. His latest remix of Kid Cudi’s collabroation with Kanye West’s ‘Make Her Say’, is more fidgety with a solid beat and bending synths, but he still brings a tribal feel with bongos and cowbells.
Finally we have quite an old tune from Foamo, but a classic none the less. Probably one of his more original and experimental tunes with use of strange ascending bass synths with a few wobbles here and there.

Joker & Ginz have forced a love child between hip-hop and dubstep. Using hip-hoppy synths and melodies, welded toghter with the dubstep beat and dirty bass, awesome dubstep has been created. Dubhop, hipstep, whatever its awesome. I was lucky enough to see Joker at Glasto having not known he was playing before, actually I was told by Skream when I spotted him in the crowd, I don’t even care if he was getting me to fuck off, Joker was fucking sick! Here’s some of his & Ginz’s best tunes, along with two from Joker alone.
