BIG NEWS —-—————-
hudson mohawke (oh deeear!) has announced the RELEASE of his obscene incredible sparkly gemstoney unreal fantastic beast (WITH ILL ARTWORK!) of a debut album entitled BUTTER via the superlabel WARP records on the 12th OCTOBER!!!!!
and it is set to be big!
saw him at melt festival back in july and it was probably the best allround dj set i’ve EVER seen – and his production matches up totally. IF YOU ARE GONNA BE AT BESTIVAL THIS WEEKEND DONT YOU MISS HIM – see you there!!!
so here - catch a preview of BUTTER (it sounds so buttery you wont even believe it this man is so talented – and its all done on fruityloops as you will see below!) plus an interview featured over at BLEEP (where you can preorder the album) and finally a whole glistening track - RISING5 -that will be on the album that is total talent! without further ado
What’s behind the name of the new album, ‘Butter’?
I just wanted the title to reflect the production and I felt that word was the perfect description in so many different ways, whether you interpret it literally or you think of a more far out buttery concept.
It’s also partly just because I just really love short-bread.
We heard a rumour that you were asked to put forward some tracks for Michael Jackson. Is this true?
well… it was discussed at one point…it was very much just in initial stages though… but who knows what could have happened if it panned out….quite gutted about that…I am working on submitting tracks for a few other major artists though
In an ideal world, who would you like to collaborate with?
CeeLo, Grace Jones, Busta Rhymes, Tunde Adebimpe, Jay Z, Dexter Wansel, Andre3000, David Bowie, so many…
How did you end up collaborating with Dam-Funk and what was he like to work with?
We were just fans of each others work and I decided to go to him with some tracks to try and involve him in the record. He was great to work with, amazingly humble and genuine guy, we’ll have some more joint goodness coming soon with any luck.
From what we can hear your music has incredibly rich texture and multiple layers of sounds. Can you give us an insight into your technical process of making beats?
Its not a really complicated process, I keep it quite simple, nothing more than just whats flowing out of my head at the time, once I have 1 or 2 elements I kind of get an image in my head of where everything else has to sit on the track and from there it just flows. technically speaking, its all sequenced in fruityloops, I have a few keyboards, a piano and a load of drums and percussion instruments, and also just got a talkbox hehe. I used to be really into sampling but at the moment Im trying to kind of create my own samples, making sort of mini/condensed tracks playing all the parts and melodies myself and then chopping those mini tracks up as if i had sampled them off vinyl.
Who are your top 5 producers of all time?
tough question…theres more than 5, but in no order, 5 of my classics; Quincy Jones, Just Blaze, Timbo, Premier, Neptunes…
How do you feel your music, your aspirations and yourself as an artist sit amongst being part of Warp Records?
For me I think Warp is my ideal home, Its the only place I can get away with basically doing exactly what I want musically, right accross the board, and still know that the label will give me full support and artistic freedom or at least some good crit if its total shit heh. It’s also just a good home for the more twisted end of a genre and so while I sometimes think my my music doesnt necessarily sit with alot of their previous releases, it does definitely fit the principles and ethos of the label and I think that is more important. In terms of my aspirations Warp are right behind me and are helping to push me continually so that hopefully soon I’ll be able to do these collabs and everything else that only exists as a dream in my head at the moment, and even if i end up broke and homeless next year, I at least got to release a record on Warp and a couple of years back even that wouldve been a completely unrealistic aspiration for me, so its alll gooood!!
mishka nyc presents keep watch volume 10——— MAJOR LAZEr !!!!!!!!!!!!
“Major Lazer is a Jamaican commando who lost his arm in the secret Zombie War of 1984. The US military rescued him and repurposed experimental lazers as prosthetic limbs. Since then Major Lazer has been a hired renegade soldier for a rogue government operating in secrecy underneath the watch of M5 and the CIA. His cover is that of a dancehall night club owner from Trinidad and he enlisted the help of long-time allies and uber-producers, Diplo and Switch, to produce his first LP. His true mission is to protect the world from the dark forces of evil that live just under the surface of a civilized society. He fights vampires and various monsters, parties hard, and has a rocket powered skateboard.”
hello!!!!!!!!!!! so apparently i’ve gone a.w.o.l (i do not even know what this stands for) – well i have returned! been at melt festival near berlin among other things – and it has all been unreal! big MEGA heads up for the other two wizards who’ve been producing (at a frightening rate) so many insane posts! here goes////
friday was opened by the unbelievable james yuill - who played a phenomenal set of catchy vocals, cheery guitar, raw drum machines and massive synthesisers – and was generally a seriously cool performer. proceeding to a beach stage to try and catch the end of TRG‘s set we stumbled upon tim exile – someone i had never heard and damn he was obscene! if you were at glade or dour you may have seen him play, sampling and looping his voice live over drum machines and sequencers in an entirely unique drum and bass style. it was the most rapid, energetic thing i saw at melt – I HIGHLY RECOMMEND YOU GO AND SEE HIM PLAY!!! hudson mohawke followed on from this and produced an unbelievable set – LITERALLY FUCKING INCREDIBLE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! every genre, all glitched up and shmoozied around in true luckyme fashion – big up to hudson in a big way. royksopp as you would expect – lit up the main stage – so much fun – and aphex twin and hecker, who followed this, played an extremely disturbing set that actually went down very well in the rain and 2am. TRAGEDY struck when SIDEWAYS RAIN (i shit you not – fully horizontal) attacked the stages and MODERAT (the duo of apparat and modeselektor-probably the best and biggest act of the festival in german opinions) were called off (so was trentmoller).
my saturday began with animal collective – a sadly dissapointing performance hindered by bad sound balance and a couple of poor song choices – but it immediately picked up with a fucking amazing technoey minimal set from james holden(i thought considering we were in germany techno should go above all else) - and possibly my favourite new song discovery of the whole festival was played – warp records’ chris clark and his recent creation ’growls garden’ – on a hill beneath a giant crane – looking over a giant lake- wooowzer. BURAKA SOM SISTEMA then played a crazy highly energetic hour of banging rhythm, followed by bloc party who were also incredible – and as another wizard has just pointed out – the night ended with erol alkan and boyz noize’s 4hour collab set of banging electro and techno – fantastic. sunday we saw kasabian – who i have now vowed to listen to more – and the festival came to an end with firstly oasis, then passion pit, and finally A VERY TIRED PAIR OF LEGS that are currently still in a process of recoveryy….

it is a very rare thing to hear two unbelievable productions in the space of one hour – BUT IT HAS HAPPENED.
and these are WITHOUT DOUBT two of the best things i have heard for months – do NOT miss them please!
firstly rayflash – FROM JAPAN (where else) – who i had absolutely no prior knowledge of has remixes stereoheroes’ new single BOOM SLANG with ridiculous levels of skill and brilliance and insanity and happiness in electronic music that is so apt with the boiling sun that has featured heavily in my day today. it has every element of a stunning remix – AND MORE!!! keep your eyes on this man and go on his myspace and listen to it all and SUPPORT!!!!!!!!!!
and then comes MOWGLI. where to even start with this one. probably one of the coolest, most understated, bouncy yet at the same time so minimal and fantastic. i have listened to his music a bit in the past – yet never have i stopped myself and had a semi heart attack and then just bounced around for a good few hours. this is worrying. i am going to -NOW-relisten to his entire repetoire. this is damn exciting. DO NOT GO HALF HEARTED ON THE SPEAKERS FOR THIS ONE – IT NEEDS TO BE JUSTIFIED!!!!!!! i think this is the movement that has been called MIDGET HOUSE.. I THINK.. well actually i hope - whatever it is just so good.
THIS IS THE SORT OF SONG THAT MAKES ME GO PROPERLY MAD -ONLY REALLY EFFECTIVE WHEN EXTREMELY LOUD I FIND
